Newark Man Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges
A Newark man was arrested on charges of domestic violence. 60-year-old Jerome Morgan of Newark allegedly physically assaulted a woman in her South Ward home according to authorities. The incident ended with Morgan’s arrest at around 1a.m. The alleged victim in this case was treated for minor injuries. The victim’s relationship to Morgan remains unknown. Morgan is currently detained at Essex County Jail.
Domestic violence is, unfortunately, very common in the United States. According to statistics by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people are physically abused by an intimate partner every minute. One in three women have been a victim of domestic violence by an intimate partner. Further statistics show no signs of domestic violence slowing. Worst of all, many cases simply go unreported due to fear of further abuse.
A domestic violence abuse victim often finds the prospect of reporting the violence terrifying as it could out the person in a life-threatening situation. However, it should be noted that there are many different options, regardless of whether the person is a victim or is simply being accused of abuse when it never happened. Among the many available resources, restraining orders are the most common approach, as they mandate that an assailant cannot be within a certain proximity of their victim. Oftentimes, the restraining order limits or eliminates contact between victim and assailant.
Regardless of what options are chosen, it’s always best for a person to have a lawyer on their side who could see them through the long, intimidating process. If you need to take out a restraining order against someone who is threatening your safety, contact a family lawyer who has all your best interests in mind.
