Are Divorce Rates Declining?

By Lois G. Schwartz | July 3, 2018

Cherry Hill New Jersey Divorce AttorneyMarriage has been a significant part of every human culture throughout history, but recent research suggests that modern-day women are breaking tradition by getting married later on in life. According to experts, this important factor has contributed to the overall decline in divorce rates.

Divorce is on the Decline

Michael Rosenfeld, an associate sociology professor at Stanford University, authored this important research. He suggests that divorces are initiated by the woman in nearly 70 percent of all cases because they are more vulnerable to relationship difficulties. He furthers that women often experience marriage as oppressive, unfair and uncomfortable.

As time has moved forward, women have gained greater expectations for gender equality. Women who graduate from college and have more career opportunities are less likely to get married at an early age. It is among this population that the divorce rate has plummeted from 27 percent to 16 percent within the last four decades. Statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau confirm that baby boomers are divorcing at higher rates, whereas divorce rates among the younger generations are falling. The New York Times suggests that divorce rates peaked in the 1970’s and is now in decline.
